Lonnie began his legal career in 1992 when he joined the prestigious firm of O’Melveny & Myers in downtown Los Angeles. O’Melveny & Myers was the largest firm in California at that time, with over 300 lawyers in its downtown office. Lonnie was recruited because of his excellent academic credentials, graduating in the top ten percent at the University of Texas Law School, which was ranked eleventh in the nation of all law schools. In law school, Lonnie excelled in trial advocacy, winning several awards for both mock trial and moot court competition. He knew from the beginning of law school that he intended to be a trial attorney, and applied himself to that end.
Lonnie spent five years at O’Melveny & Myers, where he received excellent training in the art of litigation in both the employment and general litigation departments. He assisted on a number of large trials, and tried several small matters solo. He also participated in the National Institute of Trial Advocacy’s deposition and intensive trial training program, as well as several workshops offered by Brian Garner, the current editor of Black’s Law Dictionary. After leaving O’Melveny to work for another large firm, Lonnie became a trainer for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. He also coordinated pro bono prosecution programs for several Southern California municipalities, teaching less-experienced attorneys the trial skills required to conduct misdemeanor prosecutions. He also a published author in the field of legal ethics and he contributed to the American Bar Association’s model jury instructions for employment cases.
In 2000, Lonnie established his own litigation practice. Lonnie has tried several high-stakes cases, and won them all. For example, in 1999, he tried a fraud case on behalf of one of the largest chemical manufacturers in China, winning an $8 million judgment. His most recent high-profile case involved representation of a major computer manufacturer against an insurance company, in which Lonnie obtained a $28 million judgment after a two-week trial before a federal special master.
Lonnie has the expertise to handle a variety of litigation, ranging from employment matters to complex business disputes. He also has experience in various specialty areas, such as insurance coverage, automobile dealerships and intellectual property. He prides himself on out-lawyering his opponents, developing a strategy for early resolution that gets results. Lonnie also gives all of his clients the personal attention they deserve, working as long and hard as necessary to address their concerns in a timely and efficient manner.
